What to expect
- 1An examination and X-ray to plan the extraction
- 2The area is numbed thoroughly
- 3The tooth is gently loosened and removed — you'll feel pressure, not pain
- 4Gauze to help a clot form, and clear aftercare instructions
- 5A follow-up if needed, and a chat about replacing the tooth
Recovery & aftercare
Most people feel better within a few days. For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing hard, spitting, smoking, drinking through a straw and hot drinks, so the blood clot stays in place. Eat soft food and chew on the other side. Contact us if bleeding doesn't settle or the pain gets worse after a few days.
Cost
The cost depends on the tooth and how it needs to be removed — a straightforward extraction is different from a broken tooth or one with curved roots. If you'd like to replace the tooth, we'll go through those options and costs separately. We confirm the cost after an examination.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Does tooth extraction hurt?
The area is numbed first, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Some soreness afterwards is normal and usually eases over a few days.
What can I eat after an extraction?
Stick to soft, cool or lukewarm food for the first day or two — curd, idli, khichdi or soup that isn't hot. Avoid chewing on that side until it feels comfortable.
What is dry socket?
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket comes away too early, causing throbbing pain a few days after the extraction. Following the aftercare advice reduces the risk; if it happens, contact us and we'll help.
Should I replace an extracted tooth?
Often, yes — a gap can let neighbouring teeth drift and affect your bite. Options include implants, bridges and dentures, and we'll talk through which suits you.
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Every mouth is different — we'll advise on your own situation after an examination.
